Week 1 high school football: Who picked up wins on opening night in Washington County?

Washington County's seven public-school high school football teams opened their seasons Friday night, while Saint James looked to improve to 2-0. Here's what happened:

    Boonsboro 14, Catoctin 0

The Warriors' defense pitched a shutout at home, with Jayden Paugh intercepting a pair of passes and Logan Atkinson adding a pair of sacks.

"The defense did play exceptionally well. We kind of knew they were going to be our strong suit with seven returning starters and nine with a lot of varsity experience," said coach Mark Wadel. "We changed schemes a little bit from last year and they adapted well and were flying around and making big plays."

Boonsboro took a 6-0 lead 48 seconds into its season as quarterback Colin Telemeco found a wide-open Matthew McAfee behind the Catoctin defense for a 59-yard scoring pass.

"We saw some stuff on the scouting report that the corner, when you motion to it, was often peeking in the backfield, so that's why we went to it right away," Wadel said.

Telemeco found McAfee with what appeared to be a 43-yard TD pass later in the first quarter, but it was wiped out by a holding penalty, one of several that cost the Warriors in scoring opportunities.

"That's game experience," Wadel said. "We had some holds in there, probably because (Catoctin's) kids were giving great effort, and you don't always get that against your own scout team. … We had a bunch of yards and were in the red zone in the first half a lot and then got backed out of it by penalties. That's stuff we'll correct."

Boonsboro put the game away in the fourth quarter, starting with a fourth-and-8 conversion that led to Logan Weddle's 10-yard touchdown run with 10:37 left. Telemeco ran in the 2-point attempt on a QB draw.

Graham McLean and Blake Main each recovered a fumble later in the final period for the Warriors, who stopped Catoctin on downs deep in Boonsboro territory twice in the second half.

"It's been in question what kind of team we're going to be, and they came out today and played their butts off," Wadel said. "I'm so proud of them."

    South Hagerstown 20, Century 15

JoJo Davis ran 78 yards for the game-winning touchdown with 4:24 left in the game as the visiting Rebels finished the night with 20 unanswered points.

South cut its deficit in half when Brayden Sisk passed to Cahauri Alford for an 85-yard touchdown to make it a 15-7 game late in the second quarter.

An 8-yard TD run by Davis on fourth down made it 15-13 early in the fourth quarter.

    Tuscarora 27, North Hagerstown 20

Titans quarterback Jack Urschel ran for three touchdowns and passed for another score to spoil Nathan Butts' debut as the Hubs' head coach.

After a scoreless first quarter, the two teams combined for 33 points in the second. James Jackson scored on runs of 7 and 2 yards for North, and Logan Hoffman passed to Khalil Peggues for a 20-yard touchdown to give the Hubs a 20-13 halftime lead.

Tuscarora tied the game midway through the third quarter on a 6-yard TD pass from Urschel to Isaiah Babcock.

Urschel scored the game winner on a 5-yard run with 11:12 left in the fourth.

Gabe Parker had three touchdown passes, including two to David Grayton, and Aiden McAllister and Logan Burcker each returned an interception for a score as the Wildcats dominated.

Ceonta Wilmore also had a touchdown catch, and Blake Delauter added a TD run in the victory.

Clear Spring 28, Green Street 6

The Blazers took control early, converting three turnovers into a 21-0 lead in the first quarter.

Javin Grimes ran for a 12-yard touchdown, Camden Whittington recovered a fumble and returned it for a score, and Hayden Hodge had a 1-yard TD run. Alex Matthews scored Clear Spring's final TD on a 15-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

    Saint James 46, Phelps 6

Sam Stonebraker rushed for a pair of touchdowns as the Saints improved to 2-0 with a road win.

Josh Davies also had a TD run for Saint James, while Calvin Moss and Will Taffe each had a TD catch, Liam Hall recovered a fumble for a score, and Jorge Diaz Nicolas kicked a field goal.

Carter Nesbitt passed to Zac Smith for another Smithsburg TD.
