What to know about Saturday's WCPS Elementary School Cross Country Run

Washington County Public Schools will conduct its 42nd annual Elementary School Cross Country Run on Saturday morning at Eastern Elementary. Here's what you need to know before the event:

Where is Eastern Elementary?

The school is located at 1320 Yale Dr. in southeast Hagerstown. From downtown Hagerstown, take U.S. 40 East (which becomes Dual Hwy.), then make a left at Mt. Aetna Rd., and another left onto Yale Dr. Those coming from Interstate 70 can take Exit 32B (U.S. 40 West, Dual Hwy.), then turn right at Mt. Aetna Rd.

Who is participating in the event?

Boys and girls in Grades 3-5 who attend one of Washington County Public Schools' 25 elementary schools are participating.

In 2023, there were 675 finishers across the six races.

How long are the races?

Each race is 1 mile long.

What is the schedule?

The schedule is as follows:

• Third-grade girls race, 8 a.m.
• Third-grade boys race, 8:45 a.m.
• Fourth-grade girls race, 9:30 a.m.
• Fourth-grade boys race, 10:15 a.m.
• Fifth-grade girls race, 11 a.m.
• Fifth-grade boys race, 11:45 a.m.

Who won last year's races?

The 2023 winners were:

• Lizzy Rhoderick, Clear Spring, third-grade girls, 7:44
• Rolando Thompson, Maugansville, third-grade boys, 7:04
• Addison Philp, Paramount, fourth-grade girls, 7:03
• Cruz Eissens, Fountain Rock, fourth-grade boys, 6:22
• Molly Bowersox, Clear Spring, fifth-grade girls, 7:05
• Lincoln Brown, Emma K. Doub, fifth-grade boys, 6:00

Philp and Eissens also won their third-grade races in 2022 and can become three-time champions.

Is there a rain date?

Should rain force a postponement of the event, it would be held the following Saturday morning (Oct. 5).
