FALL RIVER — After about four months, the iconic Mee Sum restaurant on South Main Street has found a buyer.

The property is under agreement while the sale is finalized. The last day of service is slated for New Year’s Eve, owner Regina Mark said.

The building that housed the decades-old Chinese eatery was listed for $449,000 back in April, though Mark declined to share how much the business sold for and did not identify the buyer. Realtor John Viveiros could not be reached for comment.

For Mark and many of her customers, it’s a time for reflection. “I had so many years in this business. We had a lot of faithful customers who followed us for many years.”

“We are the second generation,” said Mark, who ran the business with her husband, Kenny Mark, for the past 52 years.

Recounting the immense popularity their food and dining atmosphere drew, Mark remembers serving locals and out-of-towners alike. The quintessence of how loved Mee Sum is? A Connecticut customer returns week after week, she said.

For some, it’s an emotional moment. Mark says, ‘it’s time.’

“They're tearing up, crying, making me sad. They hate to let us go, but it's time for us to step back,” Mark said. “I came to this country in 1972,” she said, and since then she’s had to learn the ins and outs of the business, dedicated to the one job that for decades has served plenty.

Mark is grateful for the loyalty of Mee Sum patrons and added that their support has been especially remarkable. “Keep coming!”

Will Mee Sum live on with new owner?

“That's up to them,” Mark said, explaining that the buyers are already established in the area, and she doesn’t doubt success, similar to the kind she is familiar with, awaits them.
