"I just had to run harder in the second half," Marques said. "They're tried to get in our heads all game and it didn't work. We just have to keep running as hard as we can and keep getting batter. It's the first game and we have some stuff to fix but it feels good to win."

For Durfee (0-1), it was not the start they envisoned to begin the season after a strong preseason.

"(Fairhaven) is a very good football team," Hilltoppers head coach Taylor Brown said. "We knew that coming in. We knew it was going to be physical and a tough game. It was one thing to stop the scheme but you have to stop their players. They have really good players on the other side. I give them a lot of credit."

Marques scored the Blue Devils' first touchdown of the season from 1 yard out to give Fairhaven (1-0) the early lead. Durfee bounced back on its second drive aided by a pass interference penalty. Sophomore quarterback Matt Sherry got the Hilltoppers on the board, connecting with junior wide receiver Alvin Gaston, who made a spectacular leaping grab in the back of the end zone to tie the game at 7-7.

He wants to go out in his senior year and play the best football he has ever had in his life. I think he showed that tonight. But I'm just proud of the whole team and the kids up front. They buy into our culture. Durfee has some big, strong and athletic lineman and it was tough sledding a little early. But as the game went along, out kids just knocked them off the ball.
