The Rhea County Sheriff's Department Homeland Security division held its annual fundraiser on Saturday, March 23, at the Rhea County Welcome Center in Dayton. The event featured food, raffles for a La-Z-Boy chair and Nokian Tyres tire voucher and a silent auction.
State's February unemployment rate at 3.3 percent
NASHVILLE — After a slight increase at the start of 2024, Tennessee’s unemployment rate dropped to near record-low levels in February. Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD) data showed the new seasonally adjusted statewide rate for the month at 3.3 percent, a decrease of 0.2 of a percentage point from January’s revised rate. The state’s all-time low seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is 3.1 percent, which was recorded during April, May, and June in 2023. ...

State to halt road work for Easter weekend
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) will suspend all interstate construction work on Easter weekend in anticipation of increased holiday travel. RHEA COUNTY — The Rhea County Extension Office recently announced the hiring of new 4-H Youth Development Agent Hailey Updike. Updike is from Crossville, Tenn., and received her bachelor’s degree in child development and family relations from Tennessee Tech University. Pre-1915 vehicles descend on downtown Dayton
The Horseless Carriage Club of America (HCCA) recently stopped in downtown Dayton to visit the historic Rhea County Courthouse as part of its HCCA National Convention in Chattanooga. The club features vehicles made prior to 1915 and toured several areas ion southeast Tennessee and north Georgia during its convention.

CATS RESCUED, NO ONE INJURED IN DOWNTOWN DAYTON FIRE
DAYTON — City and county firefighters responded to a fire at Cooley's Mercantile, across the street from the Dayton Coffee Shop, on Saturday evening. Much of downtown Dayton was filled with smoke and closed to traffic as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, and the cause of the fire is now under investigation. While the structure was not a complete loss, it did suffer fire, smoke and water damage. Dayton Fire Department Chief Justin Jackson said that no one was injured in the blaze and that three cats that lived at the store were rescued and are safe. Report: Probation violation leads to heroin arrest
A Rhea County woman is now facing charges for possession of a Schedule 1 controlled substance after a routine service of a warrant for probation violation. According to an arrest report, on March 13, 2024, Rhea County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Todd Deleonardis arrived at Rebecca Wilson’s camper residence around 7:05 p.m. to serve a warrant for violation of probation. Wilson gave consent to search her camper and informed Deleonardis of drug paraphernalia located inside the camper oven, the arrest report states. ...
