The city of Bloomington is seeking feedback on a mural design featuring a "porch party," "iconic cats," and vibrant colors to be painted on the Duke Energy Substation at West 11th and North Rogers streets.

The city is accepting comments on its webpage until Aug. 21.

Where is the Duke Energy Substation?

The substation is on the northwest corner of West 11th and North Rogers streets. The mural will be placed on the south facing side of the structure and will be approximately 64 feet by 16 feet.

How is the mural being paid for?

This is one of five murals to be painted on the Duke Energy substation at West 11th and North Rogers streets. Due to the size of the structure, this mural project will be carried out in multiple installations. Duke Energy has contributed $25,000.

    Who designed the mural?

Each mural will be designed collaboratively by a group of artists. This mural design was envisioned by three local artists.

What message is the mural intended to relay?

According to a news release, the mural's theme was derived from a community survey and is intended to highlight the natural surroundings of the Maple Heights neighborhood, detailing nature and sustainability, and to emphasize diversity while creating a sense of belonging within the Bloomington community.

The news release states the design "captures the Maple Heights neighborhood and our community by showcasing native plants, insects, and iconic cats, symbolizing our connection to local nature. At its heart, a porch party scene cascades into the broader neighborhood, representing our sense of togetherness and celebration."

When will the mural be painted?

The mural will be painted during fall 2024 and Bloomington residents will be invited to participate in a community paint day to help paint the mural on a to-be-announced date.
