Man injured and woman jailed after stabbing incident at Kinser Flats in Bloomington

A man who was beaten and stabbed multiple times during an Aug. 18 domestic altercation is recovering and the woman he said caused his injuries is jailed on an attempted murder charge.

Briley Shayne Turner, 25, who lives at Kinser Flats in Bloomington, was charged Thursday with attempted murder and aggravated battery. She was booked into the Monroe County Jail at 7:25 p.m. Sunday, held on $50,500 bond.

The 36-year-old man she is charged with attacking is recovering at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was taken by medical helicopter for surgery Sunday night.

Court documents filed in the case say the victim sustained multiple injuries: two lacerations to his lower right abdomen, a puncture wound to the back of the neck, stab wounds to his upper chest, left-side rib cage, scrotum, left quadricep, lower-left hip, upper-right buttock, lacerations to the right side of his forehead and left cheek and a broken left arm with a protruding bone.

A doctor discovered the blade of a knife broken off inside the victim’s body, which led to his transfer to Indianapolis for further medical care. He is expected to survive.

Police who arrived after a tenant reported screaming and cries for help coming from Turner’s apartment reported finding her lying on a couch in the living room wearing blood-soaked clothing. A bloody baseball bat leaned against a wall.

The man was found bleeding on the bathroom floor. Near the bathtub was a bloody plastic knife handle with no blade attached. Police reported also finding a blood-covered, metal-spiked tire plug tool on the floor by the sink.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the injured man told police the attack was unprovoked. He said he and Turner “were about to take a shower together, at which point Briley struck (the victim) with a baseball bat while in the bathroom of the apartment.”

He said Turner then “began stabbing him all over his body,” and he sustained cuts to his hand when he tried to get the knife away from her.

The affidavit said Turner had numerous faded bruises on her body, a fresh bruise on her leg and a swollen right hand. The affidavit said she refused to speak to medical personnel or police at the hospital.

The first officer on the scene at Kinser Flats just before 7 p.m. Sunday reported that Turner said the victim had held her down and tried to force some substance down her throat and she had defended herself.

Her initial court hearing was scheduled for Aug. 23.
