Indiana University Bloomington’s enrollment for the 2024-2025 year is its largest class to date — with nearly 90,000 students enrolled across IU's nine campuses this fall, according to a news release from IU .

Bloomington also enrolled its second-largest beginning class to date, at 9,600 students. The campus had a record-breaking 9,736 incoming students in 2022 .

Undergraduate enrollment also increased at IU Indianapolis during its first year as an independent campus from Purdue University , with 2,438 students enrolled — a 9% increase from last year, according to the press release .

The release also stated Bloomington’s campus hit a record enrollment for students of color this year, up 7% from last year. The release did not specify the exact number, and the fall 2024 numbers have not yet been added to IU’s enrollment survey database .

Overall undergraduate enrollment also is up by 7.5% at IU East in Richmond, by 4.2% at IU South Bend and by 1.2% at IU Kokomo. Enrollment in IU’s online program grew by 10% this fall, with 9,362 students.

IU enrolls record number of students of color

Across all nine IU campuses, the number of underrepresented students of color — including Black, Latino and Native American students — increased by 7.4% from last year.

The number of underrepresented students of color in both undergraduate and graduate programs also increased across all nine campuses, with most setting record enrollment for the percentage share of enrolled students of color.

Enrollment for underrepresented students of color increased by 9.6% at IU Indianapolis (formerly IUPUI) and by nearly 7% at IU’s regional campuses.

IU Bloomington’s beginning class of 9,600 students includes 5,231 undergraduates from all 92 Indiana counties, plus out-of-state students from a record 48 states and Washington, D.C.

Thirty-eight percent of Bloomington’s beginner class held a 4.0 unweighted GPA in high school and 29% graduated in the top 10% of their high school class. In 2023, 40% of freshmen had a 4.0 GPA and 63% graduated in the top quarter of their high school class .

The overall share of Indiana residents on the Bloomington campus has shrunk in recent years. In 2014, 54% of IU Bloomington students were from Indiana. By fall 2023, that number had decreased to about 48%. IU has not yet released data on the total number of Indiana residents in Bloomington’s 2024-2025 class.
