The Marble Falls Independent School District football program is offering several opportunities for youngsters to learn more about the sport.

The first is the Friday Night Lights camp for children in Kindergarten- sixth grade May 10 at The Corral at Mustang Stadium. The event is directed by Mustangs football head coach Keri Timmerman.

“It’s a two-hour skills camp,” he said. “We want to give mom and dad a chance to have dinner by themselves. It's the first time we’re doing it.”

Timmerman noted the emphasis will be on offensive and defensive skills using circuits. Campers will learn a little more about the different positions on the field and the proper ways to do sport-specific movements.

“We’re trying to get kids out there catching and enjoying football,” he said. “They’re catching and throwing the ball. It’s fundamental stuff that’s fun.”

Cost is $40. Online registration is available in advance on the Marble Falls Athletic Booster Club Facebook page and other social media platforms and families can sign up in person at 5:30 p.m. May 10 at the stadium.

Two other camps also are scheduled.

The Passing Academy is from 6-8 p.m. Monday- Thursday, May 27-30, for incoming second-ninth graders. Cost is $40.

“We’re going to focus on throwing and catching and understanding how to run a route,” Timmerman said. “It’s on what we do and how we run our offense.”

The Mustang football camp is Tuesday-Friday, July 30-Aug. 2, for Kindergarten- ninth-graders. Cost is $50.

It’s before the start of two-a-days for the varsity, junior varsity and freshman players.

“It’s a general football camp,” the coach said. “We’re going to split into positions. We’ll put kids through offensive and defensive circuits.”

One big benefit of hosting these camps is it allows the campers to meet the coaches and develop rapport with them. Timmerman spent the first part of the semester opening Mustang Stadium to youngsters who wanted to throw and catch on Saturdays with their dads and friends and was often in attendance to assist. He has met with leaders of Marble Falls Youth Football and Cheer and has been available to help. Timmerman plans on attending youth football games in the fall.

“Relationships are everything for the kids,” he said. “We have to be around. Relationships are a big deal.”
