Marble Falls team tennis ends season on solid footing

The Marble Falls High School team tennis squad lost to Ingram Tom Moore 5-10 Oct. 8 to end its season.

The Mustangs and Lady Mustangs accomplished plenty during the season.

They finished as the District 25-4A runners-up led by junior Cooper Womack, who plays No. 1 singles and teamed with Cooper Kelley to play No. 1 doubles.

The two were virtually unbeatable.

In addition, in headto- head matchups against Belton New Tech, Burnet, Lago Vista and Salado, Marble Falls went 73-3.

That was significant to Marble Falls head coach Samuel Whitley because those four opponents were in the same district with Marble Falls for the last two years.

He credits new assistant coach Nathan Redman for much of the success.

“Coach Redman is a big help,” Whitley said. “We had a lot of good games. Without coach Redman, we wouldn’t have. We improved.” Against Ingram, Marble Falls’ wins came in boys matches. The Mustangs won two of the three doubles matches and the mixed doubles match. But once a team has won 10 of the 19 matches, all match- es stop, even though five matches were still being played with Marble Falls leading in three.

Whitley was eagerly anticipating the 2024 season because his players worked at the sport during the offseason. Some attended tennis camps and virtually everyone was at the open courts twice a week. The coach commended his athletes for putting in the sweat equity to arrive for fall training camp in August in decent shape.

While most fans are familiar with Womack’s resume - two-time boys district champion and 2024 state qualifier

- Whitley believes the others performed well in ensuring the team tennis squad enjoyed success that comes when putting in the work when fans aren’t around to see it.

“I knew we were going to have a powerful team,” he said.

The players will play for individual titles in singles and doubles in the spring.
