St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Horseshoe Bay this weekend is launching its Building for Our Future Capital Campaign to fund a $4.5 million expansion that will add 4,700 square feet to the church facility and 90 parking places on its campus.

St. Paul’s campus at 201 Dalton Circle is located atop Thanksgiving Mountain overlooking Lake LBJ. In announcing the campaign, St. Paul’s pastor, Fr. Ruben Patino, C.S.P., said the goal of the project is “to enhance our worship space and provide for the future of the parish as we address the growing needs of increasing numbers of parishioners.”

From its beginnings 42 years ago as an interfaith chapel in a resort and retirement community, St. Paul’s has grown into a full-fledged Catholic parish.

Today it has over 360 registered families and hundreds more visitors who attend Mass there on weekends and holidays.

Most recently, post-pandemic population shifts to less urban areas like Horseshoe Bay has accelerated the growth of St. Paul’s. Along with growth has come demographic change. What had been a congregation of mostly retired people now includes more young families, many with small children.

The planned expansion will increase the seating capacity in the sanctuary from 300 to 400. A 4,700-square-foot narthex addition at the front of the church will accommodate temporary seating for about 80 more.

The project also will include an upgraded baptismal font, a reconciliation room, a dedicated sacristy with room for vesting, ramps to replace stairs on both sides of the center aisle, new lighting and audio/visual systems, and new carpeting and paint throughout.

The 90 added parking spaces will accommodate expected growth in vehicle traffic, as well as the large amount of overflow parking on holiday weekends.

Construction on St. Paul’s expansion project is due to begin in the first quarter of 2025. Once work begins on the church building, services will be held in the parish’s Family Life Center (FLC) located adjacent to the church. The FLC seats up to 425.
