Democratic National Committee projects ‘weird’ message on Chicago’s Trump Tower ahead of DNC

(NEXSTAR) — Donald Trump’s name wasn’t the only thing shining from the façade of Chicago’s Trump International Hotel and Tower on Sunday night.

The Democratic National Committee — one day before kickoff of the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago — projected anti-Trump messages on the city’s second-tallest building, accusing Trump and his running mate J.D. Vance of being “weird” and supportive of Project 2025.

Biden to begin long, bittersweet goodbye on first night of DNC

“As Democrats gather for the Democratic National Convention, we wanted to remind folks of the difference between the Harris-Walz and Trump-Vance tickets,” the committee wrote on Instagram.

In a photo shared along with the Democratic National Committee’s post, Trump Tower was seen with a projected image of the words “Project 2025 HQ” about a dozen stories above the illuminated “Trump” lettering that sits permanently on the building’s façade.

Other slogans included “Trump-Vance ‘Weird as Hell’” (in both English and Spanish), as well as “Harris Walz Joy and Hope,” and “Harris Walz Fighting for You.”

Trump did not publicly respond to the Democratic National Committee’s stunt on Truth Social or X (formerly Twitter) as of Monday morning, though he has tried in recent months to distance himself from Project 2025, a controversial strategy plan for a future Republican president put together by the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank, which includes some of Trump’s own former administration officials.

Democrats have criticized Project 2025, which aims to give more power to the executive branch, in part by making it easier to fire federal workers who do not align with the president’s agenda. There are also portions that discuss demolishing the Department of Education, restricting access to the abortion pill mifepristone, and “unwinding” government efforts to stop climate change, among other proposed policies.

Trump, however, has previously claimed he knows “nothing” of Project 2025, nor “who is in charge of it.”

    Protests threaten to overshadow DNC

Aiming to counter the Democratic National Convention’s activities in Chicago this week, former President Trump is expected to hold a slew of campaign events in battleground states in the coming days.

The DNC, meanwhile, will kick off on Monday night, with President Biden himself delivering the keynote address. Other speakers during the days-long convention will include first lady Jill Biden, former President Barack Obama, former first lady Michelle Obama, former President Bill Clinton and former first lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
