Democrats attack Project 2025 on first night of DNC

On the first night of the Democratic National Convention, Democrats doubled down on their attacks on Project 2025, the sweeping conservative strategy designed to guide the next Republican president, calling it Trump’s plan to become a “dictator.”

“They wrote down all the extreme things that Donald Trump wants to do in the next four years. And then they just tweeted it out, putting it out on the internet,” Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow said. “It’s a plan to turn Donald Trump into a dictator.”

Democrats plan to highlight portions of the more than 900-page document throughout their four-day convention.

McMorrow highlighted a part of the document that calls for the “discharge of non-performing employees.”

“That doesn’t sound that scary, right?” McMorrow asked about the discharge calls. “Here’s what it actually means in plain English. If Donald Trump gets back into the White House, he’s going to fire civil servants like intelligence officers, engineers and even federal prosecutors, if he decides that they don’t serve his personal agenda.”

“They’re talking about replacing the entire federal government with an army of loyalists who answer only to Donald Trump,” she added.

Since Project 2025 hit the internet, Democrats have hit Trump and Republicans for their plans to radically alter the makeup of the federal government’s civil service, essentially doing away with thousands of civil service, nonpolitical jobs.

McMorrow also attacked the Supreme Court for its presidential immunity decision, saying that the court’s opinion makes Trump “completely immune from prosecution.”

“By the way, if you’re asking if any of this is even legal. Well, remember, thanks to Donald Trump’s hand-picked Supreme Court, he’s now completely immune from prosecution, even if he breaks the law,” she said.

The Supreme Court largely sided with Trump in a 6-3 July ruling that held that former presidents are largely immune from prosecution for official acts or decisions they made while in office.

“But that’s not who we are. We believe in a government of the people, by the people and for the people, not the government of Donald Trump, by Donald Trump and for Donald Trump,” she added.

Democrats have made Project 2025 a major part of their election pitch, saying it represents a danger Americans cannot afford if Trump is re-elected. Vice President Harris and Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.) have made numerous references to the plan during their campaign rallies.
