Former New York Gov. David Paterson (D-N.Y.) and his stepson Anthony Sliwa were attacked near their Upper East Side home on Friday night.

Five unidentified young suspects left the former governor and his son with injuries to the face and head, noted the New York Police Department in a post on X .

The suspects were climbing a fire escape before the encounter took place, sources told the New York Post .

New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Kaz Daughtry shared a flyer on X with photos of the suspects who “brazenly assaulted” the pair, detailing the attack took place at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Sean Darcy, a spokesperson for Paterson, shared a statement on X expressing the former governor’s wishes “that people refrain from attempting to use an unfortunate act of violence for their own personal or political gain.”

“He and his wife, Mary, are thankful for the quick response time from the police and the outpouring of support they have received from people across all spectrums,” the second part of Darcy’s thread read.

Paterson shared the statements to his X account.
