A Michigan newspaper issued a correction after former President Trump cited the paper at a speech in Detroit, claiming he was Michigan’s “Man of the Year” in 2023.

The former president pulled out a printout of the article from The Oakland Press during his address to the Detroit Economic Club on Thursday. Shortly after the speech, the newspaper released a correction to the article, clarifying Trump was never named “Man of the Year.”

The 2013 article now has an editor’s note at the top “setting the record straight.”

“Trump was the keynote speaker at the 2013 dinner in Novi, which drew a record crowd. He was not honored as Man of the Year. During the 2023 dinner, Trump was honored as the Man of the Decade which was reported in the 2023 story,” part of the note reads.

“We’re setting the record straight after the former president incorrectly cited the 2013 Man of the Year award during a recent speech to the Detroit Economic Club,” it adds.

Trump has referred to the “Man of the Year” award repeatedly. According to The Washington Post , Trump has referred to this false award at least 20 times since taking office.

“Guess what? They found it,” Trump said at Thursday’s speech, before showing the crowd the article printout.

The group has never given out “Man of the Year” awards, the Post reported . At the 2013 Lincoln Day Dinner hosted by the Oakland County Republican Party, he was presented with a statuette of Abraham Lincoln.

In August, former Rep. Dave Trott (R-Mich.) suggested Trump was likely referring to the 2013 dinner in his mistaken recollection.

“I was the organizer and chair of that, and we weren’t handing out Man of the Year awards and never have,” Trott told The Detroit News . “That’s not part of the club’s mission.”

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung, asked to comment on the correction, pointed to the “Man of the Decade” honor from the county GOP.

I’ll never understand why you Democrats think that it’s OK for illegal immigrants to come here and live for free on our tax money but yet FEMA doesn’t have much funding for the hurricane disaster. TRUMP 2024 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
