The Atlantic to return to monthly print publication, expand newsroom

The Atlantic announced it will restructure its newsroom Friday and return monthly publications.

“The decision to restore our print publication frequency to pre-internet levels was not made lightly, but it also seemed logical, given the strength and reach of our magazine, and the wide acclaim it receives. We believe that our readers, subscribers, and journalists will benefit from a return to monthly publication, and we believe that this move will benefit all of our platforms,” Editor in Chief Jeffrey Goldberg wrote in an internal email to staff.

T he magazine will also expand their coverage to include defense, national security, and technology; and health and science, in addition to other areas. In March, The Atlantic crossed 1 million subscribers and nearly half of their readership subscribes to the print magazine.

This expansion comes as other news outlets have reduced the size and scope of their coverage to cut back costs. Several national publications laid of hundreds of journalists this year alone.

“We crossed the million-subscription threshold; we became profitable again after running in the red for several years; we won our third consecutive National Magazine Award for General Excellence, something no other magazine has done in this century; and we’ve published stories of unparalleled impact and sophistication,” Goldberg added in his email.

He later wrote that the company would define investments in different sectors in the next few weeks.

Goldberg stated, “… my hope is that The Atlantic becomes the premier destination for readers in search of education and illumination in these areas.”
