Sawyer Schipper, 16, identified as victim in fatal Park Township crash

PARK TWP. — The victim in a fatal single-vehicle crash in Park Township on Sunday, Sept. 22, has been identified by his family as Sawyer Schipper, 16, of West Olive.

According to an obituary posted through Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home , Schipper was a junior at iCademy and previously attended Holland Christian Schools.

According to an initial release from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, the crash took place around 3:45 p.m. Sunday near Lakeshore Drive and Eagle Drive. The vehicle involved left the roadway and struck a tree.

Two passengers in the vehicle were transported to area hospitals in critical condition. OCSO did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the victims' status Thursday, but previously said it would not identify minors.

“Sawyer will always be remembered for his kind and tender heart, calm and humble demeanor, incredible attention to detail, desire to always care for others, and hopes and dreams to work alongside his mom and dad in the family business someday,” the obituary reads. “His humor would light up a room, his contagious laugh could make anyone smile.”

Schipper's hobbies included gaming, detailing cars, dancing, traveling with family, dirt-biking and hunting. His family intends to establish the Sawyer Schipper Memorial Foundation in his honor to provide support for students and others who are disabled or suffering from bullying or mental health challenges.

“Sawyer's leadership through kindness will live on,” the obituary reads.

In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family is requesting donations to Benjamin’s Hope, dedicated to the Sawyer Schipper Memorial Foundation.

Sawyer is survived by his parents Mike and Chelsea Schipper; siblings Henry and Evie; grandparents Fran Kortman, Kerrie (Bill) Bassow and Mark (Ellen) Schipper; great-grandparents Juella Schipper Elferink and Evelyn de Vries Myaard; and many close family and friends.

A visitation is scheduled for 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Central Wesleyan Church with a celebration of life planned for a later date.
