Kevin Costner ‘s period Western Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 has a streaming date.

The first chapter in the former Yellowstone star’s film saga will release on Max on Aug. 23.

Following the film disappointing at the box office — Chapter 1 , which runs three hours and one minute, opened to just $11 million over the June 28-30 weekend — Costner’s Territory Pictures and distribution partner New Line Cinema decided to pause on releasing Horizon: Chapter 2 . The second installment was pulled from a planned Aug. 16 theater release in order to give audiences the opportunity to discover the first installment on PVOD and Max.

Chapter 1 debuted in the home on Premium VOD July 16 while it remained in theaters, but at that time, a Max date had not been announced. The switch-up in what was an ambitious release plan was in hopes of allowing more time to grow the audience, as the first film sports a $100 million price tag.

“The audience response to Horizon , and enthusiasm for seeing our story continue in Horizon 2 , has been incredibly gratifying. Kevin made this film for people who love movies and who wanted to go on a journey. The support that we have received from film fans, and the theater owners, as they experience the first chapter of this saga only serves to reinforce our belief in them and the films that we have made, and we thank them for coming on board for the ride,” said Territory Pictures in a statement at the time. “We welcome the opportunity for that window to be expanded as we know it will only serve to enhance the experience of seeing Horizon 2 .”

Costner, who co-wrote, co-directed, produced and stars in Horizon , gave up his involvement with Yellowstone — for which he was being paid $1.3 million per episode — to focus on making his passion project, the multi-part venture. During a live episode of THR ’s Awards Chatter podcast , he said he had deferred his fees, mortgaged his Santa Barbara waterfront property and put millions of his own money toward making Chapter 1 . He has since said that his personal investment in the film is $38 million or “well above fifty million.”

New Line and Warners agreed to distribute and market the first two movies, with Costner paying a marketing fee. Costner intends to make four films in total. His team previously indicated that he planned to resume shooting Chapter 3 in August, though that has yet to happen. Chapter 2 also cost roughly $100 million to make.

Here is the description: “In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won — and lost — through the blood, sweat, and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends, and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.”

Along with Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington and Giovanni Ribisi star. The ensemble cast includes Abbey Lee, Will Patton, Jena Malone, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Jeff Fahey, Isabelle Fuhrman, Ella Hunt, David O’Hara, Owen Crow Shoe, Tatanka Means, Tim Guinee, Scott Haze, Tom Payne, Alejandro Edda, James Russo, Jon Beavers, Jaime Campbell Bower, Michael Anganaro and more.

Horizon is produced by Costner, Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard. Danny Peykoff, Robert Scannell, Armyan Bernstein, Charlie Lyons, Barry Berg and Rod Lake executive produce. Baird and Costner wrote the screenplay, with story by Baird, Costner and Kasdan.
