A big-screen adaptation of Scott Westerfeld’s dystopian sci-fi novel Uglies ; Emily in Paris becoming Emily in Rome; Jeremy Saulnier’s latest genre piece; the latest installment of Ryan Murphy’s grisly crime anthology series; Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen and Natasha Lyonne playing sisters in a critically acclaimed family drama; and rom-com series toplined by the charming coupling of Kristen Bell and Adam Brody are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in September.

Buzzy filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier releases his latest feature, Rebel Ridge , on Netflix on Sept. 6. The action film stars up-and-coming Brit actor Aaron Pierre as a man who comes to a small town to bail out his cousin, but has his money seized by a corrupt local police force led by Chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson). He is then forced to use his skills to retrieve the money and exact revenge. Saulnier has built a rep as an excellent genre filmmaker and his credits include the well-received horror comedy Murder Party (2007), revenge thriller Blue Ruin (2013), horror Green Room (2015) and the Netflix action thriller Hold the Dark (2018).

The second part of season four of Netflix’s hit drama Emily in Paris launches Sept. 12 and sees Lily Collins’ Emily leave Paris for Rome. The trip to Italy won’t come as a surprise to fans, who saw Emily prepare for the adventure in the first half of season four.

The first part of YA author Scott Westerfeld’s popular Uglies trilogy has been given the feature treatment and launches on Netflix on Sept. 13. Directed by McG, from a screenplay by Jacob Forman, Vanessa Taylor and Whit Anderson, the film takes place in a dystopian future where the average person is considered “ugly” until the age of 16 when they are given extreme cosmetic surgery and become “pretty.” The film is led by The Kissing Booth star Joey King (who plays Tally Youngblood) and also features Chase Stokes, Keith Powers, Brianne Tju, Jan Luis Castellanos, Charmin Lee and Laverne Cox.

The latest installment of Murphy’s crime anthology Monsters debuts on Netflix on Sept. 19. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story is a new, dramatic take on the grisly murder and subsequent sensational trial that has obsessed America since 1990s. The show stars Cooper Koch and Nicholas Chavez as Erik and Lyle, respectively, while Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny will play the brothers’ parents, José and Kitty. The first season of Monsters ( Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story ) was a huge critical success and bagged six Emmy nominations.

Hitting Netflix on Sept. 20 is Azazel Jacobs’ feature, His Three Daughters. The emotional drama stars Coon, Olsen and Lyonne, who play sisters reunited in the New York City apartment of their childhood to care for their father during his last days of home hospice care. His Three Daughters debuted at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival to wide critical praise, and currently holds a 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes (from 26 reviews), 80/100 on Metacritic (from 7 reviews) and a 3.7 on Letterboxd.

On Sept. 26, Bell and Brody star in Netflix’s new rom-com series Nobody Wants This. The new show sees Bell as an agnostic podcast host and Brody as a rabbi who meet unexpectedly at a party. The show is produced by 20th Television in association with Steven Levitan Productions ( Modern Family , Reboot ).
