Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani activist who in 2014, at just 17, became the youngest-ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, has launched her film producer career with the trailer for Last of the Sea Women, which Apple TV+ dropped on Thursday.

The documentary from director Sue Kim and A24 follows Korean women renowned as “haenyeo” divers for swimming to the ocean floor without oxygen to harvest seafood, who are now waging a battle against oceanic threats. “Haenyeo are guardians of the sea and we have protected the ocean for hundreds of years,” one of the divers says as part of the trailer’s narration.

Most of the Korean divers are today in their 60s, 70s and 80s, continuing to work in imminent danger. The Last of the Sea Women is produced by Yousafzai through her own production banner Extracurricular Productions as she continues to raise her presence in Hollywood.

Also producing is Kim and Erika Kennair, with Nicole Stott, Emily Osborne, Harry Go and Marissa Torres Ericson executive producing. The Last of the Sea Women will have a world premiere on Sept. 8, ahead of its global debut on Apple TV+ on Oct. 11.

Yousafzai made her acting debut in in the second season of We Are Lady Parts for Peacock in the U.S. and Channel Four in the U.K. And she has lent her name to projects as an executive producer, including Stranger at the Gate, the 2023 Oscar-shortlisted film directed by Joshua Seftel that portrays a PTSD-afflicted Islamophobic veteran of the U.S. Marines, who had planned to bomb a mosque in Indiana, only to be won over, while visiting the mosque, by its congregants.

The 2024 Toronto Film Festival is set to run Sept. 5 to 15.
