Emmys Hosts Eugene and Dan Levy Bring Gentle Mocking to Opening Monologue

Emmys Hosts Eugene and Dan Levy made good on their pledge to bring a gentler comedic style to the 2024 Emmy Awards .

The father-son Schitt’s Creek duo offered a warm and traditional opening monologue, poking fun at themselves, the Emmys and a few of the shows, but didn’t single out any individuals in the room for mockery.

Here are some of the highlights:

“The Emmys, also know as broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services,” Dan Levy joked.

“The Creative Arts Emmys were held last weekend, the Shogun team took home 14 Emmys, making it the most-decorated show in a single season, and deservedly so,” Dan Levy said. “The attention to detail on that show. The creators of Shogun actually had their scripts translated into Japanese, rewritten and then translated back into English subtitles that you missed because you were also on your phone watching Sabrina Carpenter eat a hot wing.”

The Bear is nominated for 23 Emmys tonight, the most-nominated comedy in history,” Eugene Levy said. “Now, I love the show. I love the show. And I know some of you might be expecting us to make a joke about whether The Bear is really a comedy. In the true spirit of The Bear , we will not be making any jokes.”

“I’m particularly proud of my streamer AppleTV+, which which continues to proudly and visibly align itself with the LGBTQ community,” Eugene Levy said, promptly his son to correct, “That’s not what the plus stands for.”

“If things go well tonight, my name is pronounced ‘Leh-vy ‘ not ‘Lee-vy,'” Dan Levy said, and Eugene replied, “And if things go south, my name is pronounced Martin Short.”

“Little bit of Emmy history here, the very first Emmys’ host in 1949 was Walter O’Keefe,” Eugene Levy said, and Dan Levy followed that with: “That’s true, and tonight we are making Emmy history as the very first father-son pair to mention Walter O’Keefe since 1949.”

The father-son duo previously said they want to take a “gentler approach” to their hosting gig.

The festivities are airing live on ABC from L.A.’s Peacock Theater.

“Just paying tribute to television, certainly the nominees, but to the medium that gave us both our starts,” Eugene said in a recent interview when asked about the hosting gig. “It’s always hit me in a funny way when jokes are done at the expense of people who are nominated — they’ve put in the work, and it’s their night, really, and you have to have enough respect for the awards show itself. Otherwise, why are we here?”

Here is the complete winners list for the 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
