‘Shogun’ Team Celebrates the Importance of Translation in Emmy Win for Drama Series

Shogun capped its big night at the 2024 Emmys with a pivotal win.

The FX/Hulu series won for best drama series, notching its fourth award of the night. Shogun , which landed 25 Emmy nominations for its first season, prevailed in the category over fellow nominees The Crown , Fallout , The Gilded Age , The Morning Show , Mr. & Mrs. Smith , Slow Horses and 3 Body Problem .

In his acceptance speech, co-creator Justin Marks thanked the executives who helped make the show happen. “You guys greenlit a very expensive, subtitled, Japanese period piece whose central climax revolves around a poetry competition,” Marks quipped. “I have no idea why you did that, but thank you for your faith in this incredible team.”

He continued, “ Shogun is a show about translation — not what is lost, but what is found when you do safety meetings in two languages, and you learn not to walk on tatami mats with your utility boots.”

Marks then shared the spotlight with star Hiroyuki Sanada, who gave a message in Japanese that was translated in part as, “The passion and dreams that we have inherited from you have crossed oceans and borders.”

This was Shogun’ s fourth award of the ceremony, following its wins for Sanada for best actor in a drama series, Anna Sawai for best actress in a drama series and Frederick E. O. Toye for directing for a drama series. Shogun , which is based on author James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name, also set a Creative Arts Emmys record by winning 14 awards last weekend.

Succession took home the award for best drama series at the 2023 Emmys for its final season, which marked the HBO program’s third year topping the category.

Eugene Levy and Dan Levy hosted the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
