The hit Darren Star series starring Lily Collins will return for a fifth season, the streamer announced, with both Collins and Star confirming on Monday in a surprise announcement that Rome will continue to be an Emily in Paris locale.
“We’re thrilled with the incredible response to this season of Emily in Paris and excited to return for a fifth to continue Emily’s adventures in Rome and Paris!” creator Darren Star told Netflix’s Tudum .
Collins, who broke the news on Good Morning America , posted a reel on Instagram saying, “There’s no place like Rome.”
The renewal comes shortly after the Part 2 debut of season four on Sept. 12.
The fourth season had ended with the show’s Agence Grateau launching a Rome office, which Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) wants Emily (Collins) to lead, giving her a reason to stay in Italy near her new beau, Marcello Muratori (Eugenio Franceschini).
“Marcello is a whole other adventure that we want for Emily because we ultimately want Emily to be able to have a better work/life balance,” Collins told Tudum. “We want to have Emily be able to smile without condition. We want to see her beyond her vacay mode. And he comes at that perfect time.”
And for her ex Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) — of whom Star had recently told The Hollywood Reporter “maybe Emily and Gabriel aren’t meant to be for now. Maybe they will be for later,” after his season four decisions — Collins added, “Unfortunately, Gabriel has to deal with the repercussions of his choice” to end things with her.
When speaking to THR after the season four finale and while awaiting the renewal, Star had indicated there would be more Rome in Emily’s future.
“Agence Grateau opened an office in Rome. They can be in more than one city, and Emily can spend time in Rome. She can spend time in Paris, too. She’s not leaving Paris,” he assured , adding, “We’ll spend some time in Rome. But she did not change her Instagram handle to Emily in Rome.”
While elaborating to Tudum with the renewal news, Star explained that the idea to open up a new Emily in Paris office in Rome came from his desire to “stay ahead of the audience and take them to unexpected places,” and prove “the show has the ability to have a bigger footprint.”
And he added of Emily’s romance with Marcello, “I feel like they have a real spark and a real connection and a real romantic connection. A lot of that’s going to continue to play out next season.”
After filming the first part of the season during a cold winter in Paris, the Emily in Paris cast and crew headed to Italy to film Emily’s Roman Holiday in Part 2. “Being in Rome was so amazing, it was the most special way for us to end this season with the crew because it felt like a holiday. The culture there is just so warm and welcoming, the streets are paved with so much history, and the food is so wonderful,” Collins had told THR ahead of the season four launch.
Emily in Paris launched to lower ratings with the split-season release. The season typically releases all 10 episodes at once. But for season four, the Aug. 15 premiere got just over half of the tune-in for the show’s last full-season premiere, gathering 792 million minutes of viewing in the United States for its premiere week, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings.
Still, the series debuted at No. 1 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 and reached the Top 10 list in 93 countries. Emily in Paris has remained on the list for four consecutive weeks since, says the streamer.
Along with creator-writer Star, Tony Hernandez, Lilly Burns, Andrew Fleming, Alison Brown and Robin Schiff executive produce Emily in Paris. Stephen Brown, Grant Sloss and Joe Murphy co-executive produce, along with producers Ryan McCormick, Raphaël Benoliel, Collins and Jake Fuller.
Ashley Park, Camille Razat, Samuel Arnold, Bruno Gouery, William Abadie and Lucien Laviscount round out the cast. The series is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, Darren Star Productions and Jax Media.
