    Austin Film Festival Adds ‘The Order,’ ‘The Brutalist,’ ‘September 5’ to Lineup (Exclusive)

    Oscar race contenders Justin Kurzel’s The Order , Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist and Tim Fehlbaum’s September 5 have joined the lineup for the Austin Film Festival, which has unveiled the full screening lineup for its 31st edition.

    The Order , the neo-Nazi crime thriller starring Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult, will be a Centerpiece Film presentation, with writer Zach Baylin and star Tye Sheridan attending. And the Oct. 24 to 31 festival will open with Malcolm Washington’s The Piano Lesson , which stars Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington and Danielle Deadwyler. Virgil Williams, who co-wrote the Netflix stage-to-screen adaptation produced by Denzel Washington, will attend.

    Also headed to Austin is Maria , Pablo Larrain’s Maria Callas biopic for Netflix that stars Angelina Jolie. This year’s world premieres include the paranoia-thriller Crossword , co-written, directed and also starring Michael Vlamis in his directorial debut; the folk-horror pic The Fetch , starring Robert Longstreet and directed by J.C. Doler; and the conspiracy comedy Operation Taco Gary’s, starring Simon Rex, Dustin Milligan, Jason Biggs and Brenda Song, with Michael Kvamme writing and directing.

    There’s also world bows in Austin for Mark Gill’s Ravens , about the famed Japanese photographer Masahisa Fukase and his wife Yoko, with Gill attending; director J.T. Walker’s La Gloria, starring David Morse, Jaklyn Bejarano and Bill Heck; and director Toni Comas’ Silent Notes, which features Daniel Durant and Matt Riker.

    A special screening of Pixar’s original series Dream Productions , a spinoff of the Inside Out film franchise set to hit Disney+ in 2025, is also set at AFF. The series follows the “dream factory” inside of Riley’s head and is set in between the events of Inside Out and Inside Out 2 .

    Austin, which bills itself as premier film festival recognizing writer and filmmaker contributions to film, TV and new media, will also feature its annual Writers Conference. This year, Robin Swicord will receive the 2024 Bill Wittliff Award for Screenwriting. Her credits include Memoirs of a Geisha, Matilda (penned with her husband Nicholas Kazan), an Oscar nomination for her work on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button , and collaborating with Ava DuVernay on the Netflix miniseries When They See Us .
