Netflix has reaffirmed its commitment to Scandinavian originals, on Thursday an upcoming slate of productions from Sweden, Norway and Denmark that, according to Jenny Stjernströmer Björk, VP of Nordic Content at the streamer, is Netflix’s “most diverse and ambitious to date.”

Netflix has commissioned more than a dozen new and returning Nordic series, with highlights including disaster drama La Palma , about a Norwegian family whose Canary Islands’ holiday is disrupted by a volcanic eruption; The Helicopter Heist , a dramatization of a daring real-life cash depot robbery in Sweden in 2009; and Danish mystery The Habitat , which follows the mysterious disappearance of a young Filipino au pair in an affluent Danish neighborhood.

Three new, previously unannounced titles, all set to launch globally in 2025, include Synden , a crime series set in rural Sweden; the Danish feature film SULT , adapted from Tine Høeg’s 2022 novel, about a couple trying to conceive via fertility treatments; and new episodes of Norwegian hit series Home for Christmas , which will be back after a three-year hiatus.

Alongside new seasons of local hits Maybe Baby 2 , a Danish comedy following two families navigating the fallout of a hospital infant mix-up; Swedish fantasy tale Ronja the Robber’s Daughter , and Pernille (aka Pørni), the Norwegian comedy series Netflix picked up from Scandi streamer Viaplay after the group scaled back its production ambitions , the streamer has greenlit a number of non-fiction and reality formats. Chief among those: Love is Blind: Sweden , a local spinoff of the blind dating phenom, which gets a second season after its successful bow earlier this year, and Making it In Marabella , an unscripted series revolving around Swedish real estate brokers hawking homes to the rich and famous on the sunny coast of Spain.

On the film side, Netflix confirmed it is backing Troll 2 , the action-packed sequel to Roar Uthaug’s 2022 feature, which has become the most-watched non-English-language film on the platform. Uthaug returns to the director’s chair for the sequel, which hits Netflix next year.

Fans of Jo Nesbo’s Detective Hole novels will have to wait a bit longer for the Netflix series Nesbo is adapting from his own books . Production is underway on the Nordic noir drama about the brilliant but introverted homicide detective, played by The Last Kingdom star Tobias Santelmann, but the series won’t hit Netflix until 2026.

Stjernströmer Björk unveiled the new Nordic slate at Netflix’s snazzy new headquarters in Stockholm. The global streamer is keen to emphasize its ongoing investment in Scandinavia, in contrast to its competitors, who, in the case of HBO Max, have shut down all original production in the region, and in the case of Viaplay, have slashed their originals budget, cutting its production of original content from around 50 to 10 titles per year.
