Max Exec Touts Spanish Drama ‘When Nobody Sees Us,’ Opus Dei Doc Series

Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max streaming service is looking to serve audiences in Spain with a mix of original drama series, documentaries and entertainment shows, a top executive of the entertainment giant told a spotlight session at the Iberseries & Platino Industria conference and market in Madrid on Tuesday.

Alberto Carullo, Max vp local original production Iberia & Italy at Warner Bros. Discovery, appeared at a Tuesday session of the Spanish- and Portuguese-language TV conference and market in the Spanish capital.

When asked to highlight some of the 12 Spanish originals that the company has said are in various stages of production or development, he started off with Enrique Urbizu’s crime thriller When Nobody Sees Us , Max’s first Spanish original, which received a sneak peak at the San Seba stian Film Festival. The show is driven by the two female protagonists — Magaly Castillo, a U.S. military police lieutenant, arriving at the Army Air Force base, and Lucía Gutiérrez, a Spanish Civil Guard colonel — who team up to solve a series of crimes.

From Zeta Studios ( Elite ) and based on a novel by Sergio Sarria, the show kicks off the action during Spain’s Easter week, which is known for its processions. The series stars Maribe l Verdú (Pan’s Labyrinth, The Flash) as Gutiérrez and Mariela Garriga ( Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning II ) as Castillo. Austin Amelio ( The Walking Dead ), Ben Temple ( 30 Coins ) and Dani Rovira ( Spanish Affair ) round out the cast.

Carullo also touted a documentary series about 13 women’s experiences with Opus Dei, the Catholic organization founded in Spain in 1928 by a priest whose mission it was to help members seek Christian “perfection.”

From Spanish journalist Mònica Terribas, El Minuto Heroico: Yo También Dejé El Opus Dei ( The Heroic Minute: I Too Left Opus Dei ) also features actress Claudia Traisac in recreations based on the experiences shared by the women.

Carullo, who previously served as head of drama of at Warner Bros. International Television Production for Spain and Portugal, said in addition to dramas and docs, Max in Spain is also betting on entertainment formats, such as popular reality competition show Pekin’ Express .

“Spain values local content. Content is the core of what we do,” the Max exec added. “We want happy subscribers. That is our objective and why we are focused on local content.”

Day one of Iberseries also featured a keynote appearance by Paz Vega , a spotlight session for Walt Disney Spain , former Lionsgate executive Paul Presburger and more.
