MECKLENBURG COUNTY, NC- Mecklenburg County is now providing energy assistance for residents experiencing a health-related crisis due to utility bills. The funding is an initiative from the County’s Department of Social Service or DSS.

Mecklenburg County’s Department of Social Service is providing energy assistance year-round to needed residents. The funding will also be added with a Crisis Intervention Program or CIP.

CIP funding will assist individuals and families who are experiencing a life-threatening or health-related emergency due to the lack of cooling stations in their homes. The funding is also eligible for residents who have the final notice of past due utility bills.

Households who want to participate in this program must meet several qualifications. The family must have at least one U.S. citizen or legal resident. The household has income below 150% of the Federal Poverty Level. The household must be able to show a cooling or heating-related emergency and is responsible for energy bills.

To apply for CIP, residents can visit the access point at allaccess.mecknc.gov. Interested applicants must choose the desired benefits, and submit the requested documents. Other options are to visit epass.nc.gov to apply online or calling the DSS call center at 704 336 3000 to submit an application by phone. The application can also be done by sending the completed requirements via email to  Energy-CIP-LIEAP@mecklenburgcountync.gov. All application manuals in English and Spanish can be downloaded prior to the submissions.

In addition to online and call, residents can also drop off their completed applications at one of the DSS locations. There are two drop-off points in Charlotte to choose from 301 Billingsley Road and The Community Resource Center at 3205 Freedom Drive, Suite 1000, Building A.
