Massillon City Council member Mike Snee resigns from seat, taking out-of-state job

MASSILLON – Ward 6 representative Mike Snee is resigning his City Council seat at the end of August due to professional reasons.

Snee, a two-term GOP councilman, said he will soon be departing Massillon for a career change, a move that will relocate his family outside of Ohio.

"This is not easy, but I feel it's God's will that I resign," Snee said Monday night to conclude council's work session. "I've had a career change that will take me out of state and down south. ... I want to take my son fishing."

Monday's session was Snee's final meeting as a sitting council member. His service with the city will officially conclude on Saturday.

Councilwoman Sarita Cunningham, R-at large, said she has appreciated knowing Snee the past few years and thanked him for his service.

"We're going to miss you," she added.

The Stark County Republican Party will be tasked to fill the council vacancy.

Councilman's resignation not related to social media snafu in June

Snee had told The Independent a few weeks ago that he was mulling whether to resign when other professional employment opportunities became available.

At the time, he said any decision made would not be related to a June 29 social media dispute with a former political opponent, Democrat Dave McCune, who had claimed he was intimidated by the councilman at his residence.

Matter closed: Massillon councilman won't face discipline by officials following intimidation accusation

McCune alleged Snee verbally harassed him and his wife, Shirley, during the episode, lasting several minutes from his porch. Police were not called.

Snee apparently felt slighted from Facebook posts and wanted to question McCune. The messages were on the topic of public security during Massillon and McKinley football games.

McCune had called on City Council to censure Snee but no formal action was taken.

Last November, Snee finished ahead of McCune in the Ward 6 race, nabbing about 60% of votes to McCune's 40%.
