Ukraine-Russia war live: Zelensky meets Trump and talks up common ground in ensuring Putin doesn’t win war

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has met with Donald Trump , talking up what he describes as the “common view” between the pair that the war in Ukraine must stop and Vladimir Putin cannot be allowed to win.

Mr Trump met the Ukrainian leader at Trump Tower in New York on Friday morning local time. After arriving together at a conference room on Friday, Trump said “the fact that we're even together today is a very good sign”.

Mr Zelensky was reported as saying: “I think we have a common view that the war in Ukraine has to be stopped and Putin can't win.”

It has been reported that Mr Zelensky extended his stay in the US to meet Mr Trump. The former US president has been railing against the Ukrainian leader since he visited a munitions factory in US leader Joe Biden ’s hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania at the top of his US trip.

Mr Zelensky also described JD Vance, Mr Trump’s running mate who has been an outspoken opponent to continued support for Ukraine, as “too radical” in an interview prior to his visit.
