The Israeli military has ordered mass evacuations of southern Gaza after Hamas claimed an airstrike on a school in the north left up to 100 Palestinians dead.

The order was given for Khan Younis , including part of an Israeli-declared humanitarian zone from which the military said rockets had been fired.

The city suffered widespread destruction during an air and ground offensive earlier this year. Tens of thousands fled again last week after an earlier evacuation order.

It comes as global condemnation of an Israeli airstrike on a school - which Israel claimed was being used by Hamas operatives - continued to grow amid reports around 100 civilians were killed in the attack.

US vice president Kamala Harris said “far too many” civilians had been killed “yet again” and urged Israel to avoid civilian casualties.

The Iranian foreign ministry also condemned the attack and accused Israel of carrying out “genocide and crimes against humanity”.

Hamas said the strike on the al-Tabaeen school, central Gaza, wounded 47 people. Israel said it was targeting a Hamas command centre and 20 militants were killed.
