Donald Trump and JD Vance held a rally in Asheboro, North Carolina, on Wednesday with the theme of national security, though true to form the former president frequently wandered off-topic.

Giving his apocalyptic take on world affairs, Trump also claimed he would be able to either solve a great deal of current international strife or would have prevented it from happening in the first place were he still president.

It was the former president’s first outside rally since the attempt on his life on July 13 and he was surrounded by bulletproof glass on stage. At one point Trump became aware of a supporter struggling with the heat and left the safety of his enclosure, surrounded by Secret Service agents, to give them a hug.

The former president also responded to the speeches given at the Democratic National Convention by Barack Obama and Michelle Obama that attacked him while drumming up support for Kamala Harris . Trump pondered why he was advised to stick to policy and shy away from personal attacks when his opponents attacked him personally.

Talking more broadly about the 2024 election, Trump said the Democrats are “gonna cheat like hell to win”.
