A suspect has finally been charged for the brutal murder of Dr. Devon Hoover, the beloved Detroit neurosurgeon who was found slain in his own home last year.

Desmond Burks, 34, is accused of killing Hoover and stealing money and two designer watches worth several thousand dollars each, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Wednesday.

Burks and Hoover, 53, were in an intimate relationship, and Burks occasionally charged the doctor for sex, Worthy explained, citing over 4,000 text messages that were examined by investigators.

A man out on probation for drug charges less than a year ago and a woman from Douglas were recently arrested following a search at a local apartment. On August 7, 2024, at around 1:00 PM, Detectives from the Coffee County Sheriff's Office Drug Unit were conducting a proactive narcotics patrol in Douglas. During their patrol, a detective spotted 30-year-old Christopher Lamar Hawkins, who had outstanding warrants for fleeing police and methamphetamine possession, driving a white 2021 Kia Sorento. Hawkins was stopped in front of apartment 203/204 on N Wheeler Ave, where two detectives approached him. Breanna Henderson, 33, then came out of apartment 203 to "investigate what was going on with Hawkins" and appeared to whisper with Hawkins during his arrest. The report states that Henderson, who temporarily lived with Hawkins, began whispering with him "presumably about nefarious activities due to Hawkins's previous history with drug distribution and evading law enforcement."

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department said three deputies responding to a report of an attempted break-in found Isaiah Winkley, 21, of Coweta County, Georgia, when they arrived outside a home in Kiln on Dec. 10, 2022. A federal judge reviewed video recorded by an officer’s body camera that showed Winkley holding a steel fence post in one hand and candy in the other as he yelled “Shoot me” several times to the deputies.  One deputy shot Winkley with a Taser that had little effect, and then deputy Michael Chase Blackwell used a gun to shoot Winkley multiple times, wrote the judge, who is overseeing a separate civil case brought by Winkley’s family.
