After a spectacular opening ceremony, the first medals of the Paralympics were awarded on Thursday as the action got underway at Paris 2024 .

There were 22 medal events on the first day of competition as a busy programme started both at the swimming pool and the velodrome. There was plenty of medal success for ParalympicsGB too, with Daphne Schrager securing Great Britain’s first with silver in the C1-3 3000m individual pursuit before Steve Bate and pilot Chris Latham matched her achievement. There was disappointment, though, for Kadeena Cox , who missed out on a third consecutive C4-5 500m time trial triumph after crashing out of the final.

Earlier, the GB wheelchair rugby team got the defence of their title underway with victory over the top-ranked Australians, but the biggest talking points came as Poppy Maskill claimed gold and a world record in the 100m butterfly - then Tully Kearney won another gold in the 200m freestyle.
