( May 16, 2024 ) The girls tennis team lost consecutive matches for the first team this season with Wednesday’s 4-1 defeat on the road against St. John Paul II.

Lauren Cutone won in three sets at third singles for the Whalers’ lone victory on the day. The senior narrowly lost the first set 7-6 before fighting back to take the second set 7-6 and win a tiebreaker 10-3 to decide the third set.

All other matches were decided in straight sets. First singles Joan Harris lost 6-2, 6-4, second singles Lily Chibnik 6-0, 6-2, first doubles Chloe Marrero and Hannah Gerardi 6-0, 6-3 and second doubles Viktoria Bozhkova and Andrea Bunlersaak 6-2, 6-1.

The loss drops Nantucket’s record to 7-5 on the season. The Whalers have clinched a spot in the state tournament but are still looking to finish the season strong in order to earn a home match to begin the playoffs.

Nantucket was 14th in the latest MIAA Div. 4 power rankings, with another update coming Friday morning. The top 16 teams are guaranteed home matches in the round of 32.

The Whalers will hold their senior recognition ceremony ahead of Friday’s match against Monomoy, their final home contest of the regular season.
