On the evening of February 23, 2024, the Manassas City Police Department responded to a critical incident in the 9200 block of Bayberry Avenue following a report of shots fired. The situation quickly escalated as officers approached the residence, encountering multiple gunshots from within.

Upon arrival, officers attempted to enter the premises, but they faced gunfire from an individual inside. In self-defense, the officers returned fire, leading to a tense standoff. The subject, later identified as a yet unnamed individual, then barricaded himself inside the residence.

After a brief standoff, the subject ultimately surrendered to the police. During the exchange, the individual sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. Emergency medical services were promptly summoned to the scene, and the injured party was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The nature of the subject's gunshot wound remains unclear at this point. Authorities are investigating whether it resulted from gunfire exchanged with the police, a self-inflicted injury, or if it stemmed from a prior incident. The incident is currently contained, and there is no active threat to the surrounding community.

In light of the complexities surrounding the case, the Manassas City Police Department has requested the assistance of the regional Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT). This external team will oversee the investigation independently, ensuring transparency and impartiality, especially given the involvement of officers in the use of force.

As the investigation unfolds, the Manassas City Police Department has assured the public of updates in the near future. The community is urged to remain vigilant and patient as law enforcement professionals work diligently to provide clarity on this developing situation.
