Preparations are underway for a transformative $70 million project set to reshape the bustling intersection at Minnieville Road and Prince William Parkway in Prince William County. The area, dubbed the "Quartz District," is poised for significant development, including a mix of up to 1,000 new townhomes and condominiums, alongside a new county park and a shopping center featuring a Whole Foods grocery store.

The first visible signs of progress are the felled trees lining Minnieville Road, marking the initial stages of construction. The cornerstone of this endeavor will be the construction of a two-level interchange, with plans to tunnel traffic on Prince William Parkway beneath Minnieville Road. This ambitious project aims to alleviate current congestion and accommodate the anticipated increase in traffic resulting from the forthcoming developments.

With over 50,000 vehicles traversing the intersection daily, the need for infrastructure upgrades is paramount. This emphasizes the importance of keeping traffic flowing smoothly, particularly to prevent overflow into nearby neighborhoods exacerbated by navigation apps like Waze.

To minimize disruptions during construction, the county plans to erect a temporary road detouring around the intersection, connecting Elm Farm Road to Prince William Parkway and Minnieville Road. Construction of the temporary road is slated to begin in early 2025, with the intersection project itself expected to span 18 to 24 months.

Although the new intersection won't eliminate all traffic lights, it promises improved efficiency by reconfiguring turn lanes and enabling uninterrupted flow on Prince William Parkway. Funding for this ambitious venture will come from the county's share of the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority's sales tax revenue, supplemented by a $2.5 million federal earmark secured by Rep. Abigail Spanberger. As construction gears up, anticipation builds for a future where smoother traffic and enhanced infrastructure define the Quartz District's landscape.
