Holding a pancake breakfast and selling raffle tickets to two football games featuring The Ohio State University Buckeyes against the Marshall University Thundering Herd and the Michigan Wolverines are two current fundraisers underway for the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ironton—both to benefit children in the community.
The newly chartered organization’s first pancake breakfast is 7 a.m. – 11 a.m. Saturday at the Ironton First Church of the Nazarene, 2318 S. Fourth St. For $8, those who attend get all-you-can-eat pancakes. It also includes a serving of sausage and a drink.
Sean Davis, president of the Kiwanis Club, said the fundraiser benefits “the Open Door School and the kids in the community.”
“Our signature project is to support the Open Door School playground, expanding and improving it,” he said. “They’re in desperate need for that. They’re lacking equipment. They’ve been working on a plan for a couple of years to upgrade it. Their funding is limited.”
Davis said Lawrence County first responders will attend the breakfast, including police, firefighters and EMS personnel with their vehicles. The event features inflatables and other activities for children.
The Ironton Kiwanis Club is also holding raffles for the Marshall-Ohio State and Michigan-Ohio State games. Those interested in purchasing tickets for the Marshall-Ohio State game can get in on the drawing for $5 a chance for two seats—or five tickets for $20.
Those interested in the Michigan-Ohio State game may purchase tickets for $10 a chance for two seats or five tickets for $40.
The drawing is Sept. 3 for the Marshall-Ohio State game. The game date is Sept. 21.
The drawing for the Michigan-Ohio State game is Nov. 10. The game is Nov. 30. Both games are at the Horseshoe in Columbus.
To purchase tickets, contact any Kiwanis Club member or visit irontonkiwanis.org.
“Anything that supports the Kiwanis is appreciated,” Davis said. “As we become more developed as a club, we will be working on other projects to help those in need.”
Davis said anyone who is interested in becoming a member of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ironton to “help support the kids in our community,” may reach out to him.
The organization, according to Davis, meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Collins Center’s Ohio Room (room 168) at Ohio University Southern in Ironton at 1804 Liberty Ave.
There is a “Contact Us” link at irontonkiwanis.org through which prospective members may reach out to organizational leaders.
