A Beaufort man was killed in a single-car collision Tuesday night on Lady’s Island, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

James Powell Jr., 46, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at 11:09 p.m. Tuesday, according to Beaufort County Coroner David Ott. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

The crash happened just after 11 p.m. Tuesday as Powell drove a 2007 Chevrolet pickup on Brickyard Point Road North, located near the northwest corner of Lady’s Island, according to Master Trooper M.R. Ridgeway of the SCHP. As he passed Ferguson Drive, the truck drifted off the left side of the road and Powell overcorrected, causing the vehicle to veer off the right side and overturn.

Funeral arrangements for Powell had not been made public as of Wednesday afternoon.
