    Football roundup: Hilton Head Island knocks off May River. Bluffton, THA roll to wins

    A roundup from Thursday and Friday’s high school football action in the Lowcountry

    Hilton Head Island 23, May River 10

    The football got started on Thursday and Hilton Head Island delivered one of the biggest surprises of the season.

    Quarterback Derrick Raniszewski threw a TD to Kaden Stewart and also rushed for a touchdown. Raniszewski’s TD run put the Seahawks up 10-7 in the second quarter. He hit Stewart on a TD pass on third down to make it 17-7.

    Raniszewski was 8-of-10 passing for 91 yards and also rushed for 12 yards. Running back Troy Timko rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter to make it 23-10.

    Thaddeus Czarnecki rushed for 74 yards and also led the team with 11 tackles. LJ Morgan recovered two fumbles and Nathan Apy picked off a pass.

    Andrew Johnson led May River with 118 yards rushing. Quarterback Tanner Macy had a TD run for the Sharks and Hudson Tanner kicked a 38-yard field goal.

    Bluffton 34, Colleton County 3

    The Bobcats moved to 5-2 with a win over Colleton.

    Aedan McCarthy connected with Carnell Warren for TD early in the game as the Bobcats won their second straight region game.

    Bishop England 31, Beaufort 14

    The Bishops rallied from a 14-0 deficit to hand the Eagles a region loss.

    Beaufort led 14-0 with eight minutes to go in the second quarter after TD runs by Will Codding and Elias Johnson.

    But BE tied it after a Quinn Mahoney’s TD pass to Zachary Balog and then Mitchell Plaisance’s 3-yard run with one minute left in the first half.

    The Bishops took a 21-14 lead on Nate Anderson’s TD run with one minute left in the third quarter. Mahoney added a TD pass to Anderson in the fourth to make it 31-14.

    Johnson finished with 92 yards rushing for Beaufort. QB Samari Bonds was 14-of-33 passing for 156 yards. Caleb Stephen caught seven passes for 90 yards.

    Thomas Heyward 35, John Paul II 7

    Colton Young and Josh Gibson each had two touchdowns in the Rebels’ victory.

    Young had a pair of TD runs while Gibson returned a punt for a touchdown and caught a TD pass.

    Tony O’Banner also had a TD run and pass for THA.

    Whale Branch 14, Lake Marion 12

    The Warriors picked up their second straight two-point victory.

    St. John’s Christian 35, Hilton Head Prep 27

    The Dolphins lost their second straight game on the road to SJCA.
