Pie Contest, cookout, and live music scheduled for annual Mt. Beulah Church event

    Staff Report

Mt. Beulah Church, 1781 River Road, will host Pollard Day on Saturday, September 14, at 4 p.m.

According to Phyllis Preston, secretary of the church’s administration board, the event will feature cookout food, a pie contest, “good fellowship,” and Southern Gospel music. Pies must be presented by 4:15 p.m. to be eligible for judging in the competition.

According to the Journal’s reporting last year, the concert featured a live performance by The Griffins, a southern gospel trio from Spartanburg, North Carolina. The trio labels itself “progressive” and has won multiple regional awards for its musical performances.

Preston said this is an annual event that has been held for over 30 years now. This is the church’s second year hosting it, even after its three-year COVID-19 break. It has been three years since the last time the church has been able to host this event, but it’s back and here to stay as long as COVID stays away.

“This is an event that when we started it, we had people who grew up there, have gone away, and through the years, they have come back to enjoy all the fellowship that they grew up with and are familiar with. This is just an event for the surrounding community there,” Preston said to the Journal last year.

    The entire community is invited.

Mt. Beulah Church used to be associated with the United Methodist Church, but in June 2023, it voted to change its name and drop its association with the United Methodist Church.

According to PBS , Mt. Beulah is part of a much larger community of people leaving the United Methodist Church because church law forbids the marriage or ordination of “self-avowed, practicing homosexuals.” The church’s pastor is Norman Colvin, and the church’s number is 859-229-8502.
