SMITHFIELD — Accepting U.S. passport applications has become a lucrative sideline for the Johnston County Register of Deeds office.

The deeds office became a Passport Acceptance Facility in June 2014. Since then, the office has collected more than $763,550 in revenue from the service.

This past fiscal year, the office collected $111,520 in revenue from passports, a figure that has climbed year after year.

Craig Olive is Johnston County’s registrar of deeds. “Having our office serve as a Passport Acceptance Facility is a great way to not only serve the citizens of Johnston County … but it is also a revenue generator for the county,” he said. “My hope is that the added funds this service generates for the county will help to continue keeping our county tax rate at a minimum.”

The deeds office also records real estate transactions, issues vital records and administers notary public oaths.

“My staff and I consider it an honor and privilege to serve in any way that we can and to provide excellent customer service to the citizens of our great county,” Olive said.

The Johnston County Register of Deeds office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call 919-989-5160 or go to jcrod.org .
