WILSON’S MILLS — The Johnston County Public Schools on Aug. 13 broke ground on Wilson’s Mills High School, 517 Talton Road.

Among those on hand for the ceremony were graduates of the original Wilson’s Mills High School.

“I am so proud and so thankful,” said Wilson’s Mills Mayor Fleta Byrd, a graduate of the original school. ”It brings back the high school.”

Slated to open in the fall of 2026, the 278,000-square-foot school will have space for 2,000 students in a three-story academic wing and a two-story arts and athletics wing.

The school will be the 50th in Johnston and help relieve crowding at other public high schools in the county.

The building’s design integrates the school district’s focus on creating safe and secure learning and work environments. The main vestibule has clear visibility and multiple points of hardware access control that create a multi-layered security approach.

The campus boasts 11 science labs, a 600-seat auditorium, an auxiliary gym and unique learning spaces for a robust course catalog and special programs. A two-story commons will serve as a dining space, flexible learning space or athletics and community event space. The commons is also where the academic wing meets the arts and athletic wing.

Proceeds from the 2022 school bond issue in Johnston County will fund the construction.

Landis Bullock is chairman of the Friends of Johnston County Public Schools Committee, which campaigns for the passage of school board issues in the county. “Some areas have the issue of slowed growth, which causes some to close schools,” he said. “We are fortunate that this is not a problem of ours.”

Another school bond issue is on the November ballot in Johnston.

“With continued growth and the work of the Board of Education and Board of Commissioners, we will continue to build schools, providing excellent learning environments for students and perfect professional spaces for educators,” Bullock said.

The new Wilson’s Mills High will bridge the past and future by keeping the original mascot, the Green Waves.

“Long live the Green Waves of Wilson’s Mills High School,” said Jim Uzzle, president of the Wilson’s Mills High Alumni Association, which has 300 members.
