SMITHFIELD —UNC Health Johnston has named its latest Ambassador of the Month. She is Ruthie Wilson, a nurse and the coordinator of emergency services at the Smithfield hospital.

During a recent presentation, CEO Tom Williams said Wilson leads by providing outstanding customer service. “During daily rounds, she looks for ways to satisfy patients and to ensure their safety,” he said. “She has a knack for diffusing anger.”

Before coming aboard in 2008, Wilson was a nurse in the emergency department at Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn for two years, and she was on the surgical/trauma floor at WakeMed in Raleigh for seven years.

When Wilson saw a chance to work closer to home, she grabbed it.

“I like the fast pace of the emergency department and that every day is different,” she said. “I love our staff, and my director is amazing.”

Wilson says she enjoys teaching and ensuring that nurses feel confident and equipped to do their work. “I like being present every day and helping out when needed,” she added.

Wilson is involved in the work of several committees. Recently, she helped get new bed alarms placed on stretchers. Also, she puts together and sends out the department’s weekly huddle, mindful to always share the positive.

Wilson and her husband, Erik, live in Smithfield and have two daughters and a granddaughter. In her spare time, she enjoys time with family, relaxing at home, swimming and an occasional vacation.

Through the ambassador program, Johnston recognizes teammates who go above and beyond the call of duty. They deliver quality care, foster teamwork and offer excellent service.

In addition to a designated month-long parking space, Wilson will receive eight hours of paid time off.

I certainly hope she will be present during the 3rd shift ( overnight hours) in the ER at Smithfield as I , a insured UNC patient surely didn’t see anyone coming around to check on my safety or diffusing the anger I received from some very unprofessional and grossly rude nurse, ct scan staff, and ultrasound staff of the ER during my visit on the night of June 13th 2024, I did fill out a complete complaint if you care to read. I would have welcomed the “ During daily rounds, she looks for ways to satisfy patients and to ensure their safety,” and it may have remedy the situation. If this is provided to patients only during the day, please remember patients don’t choose the time they get sick and those seeking care at night deserve the same quality of care as day patients!
