CLAYTON — As students close the book on the first week of school, the town of has some tips to keep everyone on track and ensure a smooth transition into the new academic year.

“To promote a safe environment around schools, the Clayton Police Department is reminding drivers to be extra cautious in school zones,” said town spokesman Nathanael Shelton.

He noted speed limits are lowered when signs are flashing or during posted times, and drivers should yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, where foot traffic is heavy and sudden stops may occur.

It’s also important to know when to stop for a school bus. All traffic must stop on two-lane roads, two-lane roads with a center turning lane and four-lane roads without a median. On divided highways with a median and roads with four or more lanes and a center turning lane, only traffic behind the bus is required to stop.

When drivers see yellow flashing lights on a school bus, that means the bus is about to stop. If red lights are flashing and stop arms are extended, the bus is stopped, and children are getting on or off. All vehicles must then come to a complete stop and wait until the bus moves again.

When stopping for a school bus, drivers should give children ample room to safely enter and exit the bus. The area within 10 feet of a school bus is the most dangerous.

“In addition to safety, the Town of Clayton is focused on supporting students by providing access to valuable educational resources,” Shelton said. Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library offers a wide range of databases through NC Live to help students excel outside the classroom:
