Pioneer Library System awarded over $30K for health programs

The Pioneer Library System Foundation received over $30,000 in grants from the Oklahoma Department of Libraries and the Institute of Museum and Library Services to support health literacy programming.

The funding will help libraries across six locationsBlanchard, Newcastle, Norman East, Norman West, Purcell and Tecumsehoffer a wide range of health and wellness activities.

Programs supported by the grants include Healthy Cooking, Intergenerational Yoga, Tai Chi, Kickboxing, Hip-Hop, Self-Defense for Families, StoryWalk expansions, Music Trails, Art Therapy, Healthy Food Gardening and more.

These initiatives are designed to enhance health literacy, a vital skill that helps individuals find, understand and use information to make informed health decisions.

“Public libraries in the state play crucial roles as partners in community-based health literacy initiatives,” says Brooklyn Bors, programs and partnerships officer of the Office of Literacy Development, ODL. “Through this project, libraries will contribute to advancing health and wellness in their communities based on needs identified through the most current health data.”
