In an announcement Tuesday regarding Oklahoma's social services sector, Dr. Deborah Shropshire, director of Oklahoma Human Services, announced her departure from the agency after a career spanning more than two decades.

“I will continue to stand by the agency and offer support to its next leader to ensure a seamless transition as the agency continues to focus its work on our mission to promote the safety, independence and wellbeing of Oklahomans," she said.

Shropshire, who assumed the role of Director in January 2023, has been a pivotal figure in shaping the agency's direction and impact since joining OKDHS in 2014. She held a series of influential positions, including roles as child welfare director, deputy director of community partnerships, and medical director for children and youth in foster care.

Under Shropshire's guidance, OKDHS has made significant strides in several key areas. The agency has consistently received positive evaluations for its “Good Faith” efforts in implementing the Pinnacle Plan, a comprehensive strategy aimed at improving Oklahoma's child welfare system.

One of her most notable accomplishments has been positioning Oklahoma as a national leader in providing developmental disabilities services. This initiative has not only improved the quality of life for individuals with disabilities but has also set a benchmark for other states to emulate.

Shropshire spearheaded the launch of “Aging Our Way," an innovative plan designed to modernize services for older Oklahomans to ensure the state's aging population receives the support and care they need to maintain their independence and dignity.

The comprehensive initiative orchestrates collaboration among public entities, private enterprises and various other organizations to proactively address the demographic shift towards an older population in Oklahoma in a twofold plan - to empower senior citizens to live life according to their personal preferences and values; and to ensure they have access to the necessary resources and support systems that facilitate a healthy, fulfilling lifestyle.

During her tenure, Shropshire also oversaw the modernization of the application process for various public assistance programs. This includes streamlining access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), child care subsidies, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). OKDHS also enhanced its Employee Assistance Program, implemented weekly communications to all staff and organized employee roundtable discussions throughout the state.

"I have spent the entirety of my career in service to Oklahomans, and it has been the greatest joy of my life to walk alongside our incredible team at Oklahoma Human Services as we strive today to improve our state's tomorrows,” Shropshire said. "Whether in Child Welfare, where I first found my love for this agency, its employees and clients, or in services that support those facing poverty, our work has been about building bridges of hope."

Her last day will be Sept. 13, and she will be available to assist the incoming director during the transition period, according to the agency.
