Democrats from Kansas and Missouri joined their counterparts from around the country at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. This year they celebrated state pride with a dance party style roll call.

As prominent Democrats announced their votes for current Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, the convention’s DJ played a walk-up song for each state.

Missouri and Kansas represented their states with differing approaches. One song was released four months ago, and the other was released almost 50 years ago.

Here is what was on the playlist for the neighboring states:

“Good Luck, Babe!” by Missouri native Chappell Roan played as the Show Me State delegates presented their votes.

Originally from outside of Springfield, Roan’s career has skyrocketed in recent months following the release of her album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” in 2023. With Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas in the background, a Missouri party leader announced that 68 voted for Harris and two delegates voted present.

The Missouri Democratic Party sent several song options for DNC organizers to choose from, a representative told The Star in an email.

“We are so proud of Chappell Roan, not only for her music, but how she has given back to our local community, which also happens to be near where gubernatorial candidate Crystal Quade is from,” the spokesperson wrote.

Sunflower State delegates cheered to “Carry on Wayward Son” by the band Kansas. Founded in Topeka in 1973, the band has become a classic rock staple.

The 39 delegates , decked out in Chiefs jerseys emblazoned with “Kansas Dems,” all voted for Harris.

The Star had not heard back from the Kansas Democratic Party, Kansas band or Chappell Roan.
