Opening night in the NFL is reserved for the Super Bowl champion, and the Chiefs are hosting for the third time in the last five years. The Baltimore Ravens visit GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on Sept. 5 in a rematch of last season’s AFC Championship Game.

But it’s the fourth time since 2017 the Chiefs will have appeared in the game. That year, the Chiefs were the visitors and won at the New England Patriots 42-27. Since then, the Chiefs have played at home as the champs, defeating the Houston Texans 34-20 in 2020 and falling to the Detroit Lions 21-20 last season.

The game historically ranks among the highest rated of the season. Nearly 27 million in total audience watched last year’s game on NBC.

“Opening night is super exciting because you’re kicking off the NFL season for everybody,” Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill said.

Another storyline is the glamour quarterback matchup: Patrick Mahomes vs. Lamar Jackson, a battle that encompasses four of the past six NFL MVPs. Mahomes won the award in 2018 and 2022, Jackson in 2019 and 2023.
