A scuba diver went missing while exploring an abandoned shipwreck in Wisconsin, authorities say. Now, a search is underway.

The U.S. Coast Guard received a notification at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, that the diver had not returned to the surface after going in Lake Michigan to explore the shipwreck , according to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department.

The location where the diver went missing is 6 miles off the coast of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, deputies said. The ship is at the bottom of 100-feet-deep water.

Crews began a search and recovery mission, but it was postponed at 4:40 p.m. Tuesday due to conditions on the water, according to the sheriff. Recovery operations were expected to resume the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Authorities have not released identifying information about the missing diver.

The diver was exploring SS Wisconsin , which sank in 1929, according to WISN.

All but nine of the ship’s crew members were able to abandon the vessel before it sunk, according to Aquatic Adventure, Inc. The boat’s captain was pulled from the water but later died from exposure.

The fully-intact shipwreck is now considered a popular site for divers , WGN reported.
