Gunfire rips through home, killing sleeping 12-year-old, Ohio cops say. 2 charged

As 12-year-old Isabella Carlos slept soundly in her home, a barrage of gunfire rang out when a pair of brothers shot at three Dayton homes, Ohio police said.

Gunshots broke into the girl’s room in the early hours of Aug. 23, striking and killing her, police said.

“As soon as I went to check to see if the front door was locked, my youngest daughter called my name. She was like ‘Dad! Dad!’ and I was like ‘What?’ She’s like “Bella,” so I flew upstairs and I found her and I was like ‘Oh my God,’” her father told WHIO.

Now, the two suspected shooters, 19-year-old Javen Conner and 23-year-old Antawan Benson, have been indicted by a grand jury in connection with the fatal shooting, Montgomery County prosecutors announced in a Sept. 9 news release.

On the evening of Aug. 22, hours before the shooting, the brothers approached a woman in her vehicle and inquired about a social media post about their cousin, prosecutors said.

Police were called and everyone left, prosecutors said. The woman was in the car with another woman and children, according to prosecutors.

Around 12:30 a.m., the brothers fired shots at three homes using an AK-47 and AR-15, prosecutors said. The seventh grader was fatally struck.

The brothers are now facing several charges:

• Two counts of murder

• Three counts improperly discharging firearm at or into a habitation

• Three counts felonious assault with a deadly weapon

• One count discharge of firearm over a roadway

• One count aggravated menacing

Additionally, Benson is charged with two counts of having weapons under disability, according to the news release. Both brothers were on probation for previous convictions, prosecutors said.

They are scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 12.
